Horus Cinema Club. October 2025
“The Debate of Text, Image, and Space: The Drama of Meaning in the Mirrors of Directing and Set Design”
This event is not a typical discussion about cinema, but rather an exploration of a complex territory where text, image, and space intertwine. Here, art is no longer merely a tool for representation, but a laboratory for questioning what we see, hear, and perceive as present.
– The director here is not a conduit for vision, but an architect of revelation, distributing light and shadow on the visible and on what lies behind it.
– The author is not the owner of the story, but a mask of language that shatters to reveal its emptiness more than it conveys its meaning.
– As for the set designer, they sculpt a space not as a silent backdrop, but as a dialectical entity, where the venue transforms from a neutral stage into an enigmatic protagonist imposing its own logic. It is drama, manifested as an open-ended debate:
– Do words construct meaning, or does the image usurp their power?
– Is space merely a frame, or a metaphysical presence that resists both text and image?
– And what meaning is born when these three forces intertwine in a hidden struggle that translates itself into a work of art?
The Horus Cinema Club meeting in October 2025 does not offer an answer, but rather reveals a deeper question: How does art become a laboratory for existence itself? Where meaning is not fixed but fragmented, the text is not closed but cracked, and space is not still but speaks through its silence.
The club is honored to host three leading contemporary figures in screenwriting, directing, and set design:
– Dr. Thanaa Hashem, screenwriter, professor of screenwriting at the Higher Institute of Cinema, director of the Arab Creativity Festival, and member of the Arts and Culture Committee of the National Council for Women.
– Dr. Adel Yehia, film and television director, professor of directing at the Higher Institute of Cinema, and former dean of the institute. Former Vice President of the Academy of Arts.
– Professor Mustafa Sultan, Professor of Set Design at the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts and former Dean of the Institute at the Academy of Arts.
